Lauren Gaggioli joined me on the Real Life Momz Podcast as we discussed the importance of naming our purpose and how we find it.
“We know what matters to us, but often we don't take the time to pause and listen to the hollering of our own heart,” said Lauren Gaggioli
To find our purpose, Lauren explains we need to start by peeling off the “layers of paint” or digging deep into our core. We have to think back to those moments when we are in such a state of “flow” that we lose track of time. It's in these moments that we can identify our core values.
To get to this point, it's often hard for us to do this ourselves, and it's helpful to have someone else, friends, colleagues, or family to talk with and reflect on our personal stories, strengths, and weaknesses. It can feel intimidating to open up, but it can also be a bonding experience.
Once we have our core values identified, it's time to create a resonant "why" statement that keeps us moving in that direction of our purpose. And then, we can apply this statement to all aspects of our life, including our family and business.
When it comes to business, it's important to remember that our purpose should be personal, and our business should fit into that. We are context-switching machines, and it's easy to define ourselves by our different roles - mom, daughter, friend, etc. To prevent fragmentation, it's essential to unify our purpose and find ways to live it out daily.
A unified sense of purpose makes it easier to say yes or no to opportunities. It is easy to say no when it doesn't align with our core values, and it can make it less scary to take on something bigger than ourselves if the opportunity aligns with our purpose. As Lauren said, At the end of the day, “Happiness is not the goal - fulfillment is.” If we can spend 15 minutes a day living out our purpose, we can rest knowing that we moved that day.
